Something that I don’t talk about enough is the ‘why’. Why should you buy my art?
Well here’s the thing, I don’t want you to just buy my artwork, I want you to buy art for YOUR HOME. I want you to buy human made creations that YOU connect with.
THAT MAY NOT BE MY ARTWORK, but, you certainly won’t connect with that mass produced print you still have hanging on your wall, you know that one that has begun fading. It’s the one that only cost you a few dollars but ‘it filled a gap’.
It may have filled a gap, but it doesn’t fill your soul.
When I sell my artwork, I am always sure to purchase more handmade pieces. Paintings, prints drawings and sculptures from other artists, we have been doing so for around 6 years. It is called “Art Collecting” it is not intended to be rushed. A good collection will take us time, a lifetime. One piece does not need to match the next piece, but it should hold a story, reflect the space that you are in at that time and place in your life.
Perhaps your budget wont stretch to the six figure artwork right now, guess what mine neither but there are human made creations available at all price points. When you start accumulating the small pieces they begin to tell your story.
As an artist I was incredibly reluctant to create prints of my artwork but, it offers an affordable way to grab something unique. I made the decision with comfort knowing each collection is limited. In the same way, my hand printed tote bags are a fabulous handmade creation and art you can carry with you.
So what art do we buy for our small family home?
We love to support university graduates so we have a few really raw pieces that are actually some of my favourites. They bring a young perspective to our home. Sculptures both functional and other work just for aesthetics, I love the texture and tactile nature of ceramics. I have purchased work from friends and have become friends with artists I have purchased artwork from. Some artists we have multiple pieces from (and would like to buy more) others are a statement. Artworks I have bought both online and in person.

Always have a chat to the artist you are investing in, not only is it lovely to get to know the artist, but from an artist point of view its also love to learn more about your collectors.
Your home is not meant to look the same as your neighbours, it is meant to be a place that YOU and YOUR FAMILY feel at home. Don’t get me wrong if that is looking like the Jones’ that’s cool too, but I recommend you just trying one artwork. See how it changes the space, see how it changes your mood.
So the why. The answer to that question comes simultaneously with the reason I chose to write this piece. This morning I was delighted to receive my most recent acquisition in the post, unpacking that work with my 6 year old beside me. It was her joy. Pure ecstasy that she shared when the parcel was opened. This is not the first time this has happened and I know that it wont be the last. My family and guests spend hours just looking at the artwork in our home. That joy that my daughter felt this morning, that joy lasts, that connection lasts. It lasts longer than any print from your local chain store ever will.
Original artwork holds more value than can ever be measured and it is something I both to own and have the privilege to create for others.
